The BHS Band enjoys overnight trips!

These trips are priviledges for which our students meet the following requirements: 90% achievement
1) Smartmusic (can be satisfied with only 70% of scores possible for the pretest, Christmas/parade & 2 festival pieces)
2) Mr. Austin's Notes contract, excellent ATTENDANCE, required forms and in some cases the BHS Activities Code
3) Academics: 3.0 grade point average or higher
4) Costs (expected to be offset by fundraising). Our Music Boosters invite all interested parties to attend meetings held (usually the 2nd Wednesday) monthly where we discuss trips, plans, fundraising, etc.

March 19 - 23, 2012 Arizona trip including Chinle High School, the Grand Canyon and NAU

This year's spring band trip is combined with choir and orchestra to visit Chinle Tuesday, the Grand Canyon on Wednesday and NAU (with dinner at Black Bart's Steakhouse) on Thursday. Monday and Friday are travel days. The trip costs $550 per person with payments in September, November and January. Of course, the trip is optional and Music Boosters are assisting the groups with fundraising. Download the required trip slip here.

[past] March 3 and 4, 2011 Festival trip included Disneyland performance

Disney performance
The SCSBOA Festival at Littlerock High School, 1:30 p.m. on March 3td followed by marching at Disneyland, 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, costs averaged $150 per person. The Smartmusic assessment included "Flight of the Piasa" by Robert Sheldon and bandmembers have 3.0 gpa requirements (see above). Next year's festival trip (expected to be a Grand Canyon trip) will also have a Smartmusic assessment and gpa requirements. Students auditioning for honor groups (i.e. WIBC & Rose Parade) did Smartmusic so we spent much time getting the word out about BHS Band using Smartmusic.

*Smartmusic is computer software that many band directors use for teaching music concepts & recording school bands. It's helpful also for demonstrating classical/jazz/misc. styles with either piano accompaniment or band accompaniment or whatever medium was used to make the audio file. Our BHS Band members performing in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade earned spots as well as our WIBC (Seattle honor band) participants based on Smartmusic assessment. Teachers who use Finale (notation software) make school band pieces available for members to learn/practice/test music using any web-connected computer running Smartmusic.
Note: all out-of-state travel requires school board approval.
On Thursday, March 5, 2009, the SSUSD school board approved the Hawaii 2010 trip.
Summer 2010, they approved the 2012 Arizona trip.

The Spring 2010 band trip was a Hawaii Festival trip which cost $2,000 per person. A $200 deposit was due April 15 from every applicant (band, choir or orchestra member). More info via this link. The next trip to Hawaii is proposed to be Spring Break 2014 (pending school board approval).
